Ian Ferguson has emerged in a wave of 60’s and 70’s influenced artists that all seem to have landed in Nashville. Touring with the likes of Ron Gallo, TWEN, and Liza Anne, Ferguson is undoubtedly carving out his own lane in modern psych-rock and his latest single “I Do Not Mind” is no exception. I’d be willing to bet Ferguson has spent ample time pouring over George Harrison’s discography; the layered vocals, conversational verses, and psychedelic details all build into a complete work reminiscent of Harrison and his contemporaries. “I Do Not Mind” is a song about spending time with someone you’re really excited to spend time with, the first stage of a crush if you will. The line “You make life before seem like a blur” represents the kind of blind bliss that inhabits a freshly sparked romance. The opening lick of the song was something I had in my back pocket for some time. I had been listening to a lot of pre-psychedelic 60’s British Invasion stuff, and there’s a specific kind of attitude behind the delivery of those songs. There would be charming melodies and instrumentation, delivered with an almost sarcastic vocal performance. An out-of-tune upright piano, 12 string acoustic guitar, and a tremolo-heavy electric guitar make up the sound of the track. Given the way the song moves, I was able to have fun with the vocals, stacking harmony after harmony in my basement alone. Call it freedom or call it isolation but having that time to yourself really gives you an opportunity to lose your mind a little bit, and some great things can come from it. - Ian Ferguson
